WORKSHOPS & TALKS

Workshops

FTH:K has devised a range of workshop and talks in Theatre Making, Performance and Arts Management (integrated or otherwise) that it offers at school, intermediate and professional levels. Our team can tailor-make workshops within our field for any group (30 max) to address specific objectives. So if you want to focus on something in particular, let us know and we'll see what we can do!

Listen With Your Eyes

Ssh. Be still. Be very quiet. Be aware of where you are. Listen with your eyes...and theatre will happen. This workshops looks at some of the approaches of building theatre from scratch through an observation of the space between people and a manipulation of tension and rhythm to create highly charged meaning by playing simple games. The result? A reinvigoration of the fundamental building blocks of theatre, and a vision of truly accessible performance.

Duration: 1.5 - 3 hours (depending on level of experience)
Participants: 30 (all levels of experience - but preferably not mixed to offer a better learning experience)
Requirements: Large, clean space, with CD player. Wooden floor nice, not essential.

Masked intentions

Is our face really our biggest acting commodity? What happens if we cover it up and allowed your body to take over its function? Sound impossible?? Not so! In this workshop, we explore the basic principles behind mask work, learning how to create complex and detailed characters without the need of facial manipulation or words. You up for the challenge??

Duration: 1.5 - 3 hours (depending on level of experience)
Participants: max 30 (all levels of experience - but preferably not mixed to offer a better learning experience)
Requirements: Large, clean space (sprung wooden floor would be great), with CD player

Comic Book Mime

Stand by for Madness and Mayhem! Unleash your physical imagination and go completely bonkers as we dive into the kooky world of Physical animation, voice manipulation and general all-round cartoon craziness. A depressed toilet that sings the blues? A vegetarian LAWNMOWER ON STRIKE? Oh yes! Create oodles of characters, places and narratives using only your body.

Duration: 1.5 - 3 hours (depending on level of experience)
Participants: 30 (all levels of experience - but preferably not mixed to offer a better learning experience)
Requirements: Large, clean space, with CD player

The Business of the Arts

You work in the arts and you are constantly hearing the word "sustainability" bandied around. However, in your experience, sustainability is often replaced by sheer survival! If you feel like this, you are not alone. Globally, it is getting more challenging to access resources of all kinds to keep your organisation, group or project afloat, but there are ways to start the momentum going that will see you reaping the benefits over time. Using John F. Kennedy Center's President Michael Kaiser's The Cycle as a starting point, this workshop looks at the things FTH:K has done since its inception - both right and wrong! - to keep it growing every year.

Duration: 1.5 - 3 hours (depending on level of experience)
Participants: 30 (participants must have experience in managing a group or company, or be working on something presently to attend this workshop)
Requirements: Flip chart and/or projector; chairs and writing materials

Talks

Integrated theatre performance

FTH:K is South Africa's only Deaf and hearing integrated theatre company and is starting to make its mark on the SA cultural landscape. Come join the core company members and creative team behind OfficeBLOCK to talk about their working processes and (r)evolutionary journey towards an inclusive, integrated culture.

Duration: 45mins + 15-30minute open questions
Appropriate for: Learners, Students, and older
Special requirements: AV equipment: DVD + projector; possibly copies of FTH:K info

Get the Picture!

South African performance has always been very visual and vibrant. But the last few years has seen such a sharp growth in new collaborations and approaches to making theatre that crosses disciplines and boundaries that a fresh momentum is in place - the development of a strong visual or total theatre approach.

FTH:K finds itself part of this movement with its strong focus on non-verbal theatre. Come join in an absorbing discussion that unpacks the creative process of seminal works like Pictures of You, QUACK! and Womb Tide, and reflects on emerging trends of Visual Performance in the country.

Duration: 1hr
Appropriate for: Learners, Students, and older
Special requirements: AV equipment: DVD + projector; possibly copies of FTH:K info
