GUMBO

GUMBO was South Africa's first full-length Deaf & hearing clowning work, the result of FTH:K's unique blend of physical performance, clowning, story-telling and work with integrating Deaf & hearing performers. After 124 performances, tours to Germany, Argentina and most of South Africa, GUMBO has been put to bed for a while.

The Story of GUMBO

In a country far away, in a rumble-down seaside inn, a young Deaf boy works the kitchen for his father, a bitter man embarrassed by his son's "disability". On a dark & stormy night, a travelling salesman and his daughter seek refuge and a hot meal at the inn. Always quick to spot an easy touch, the inn-keeper welcomes them in, and proceeds to hustle the traveller in a game of cards. As the wine flows and the stakes are raised, the salesman bets his daughter on the final hand...
And so the ingredients are added to a heady tale of clandestine romance, terrible deeds and new-found courage - seasoned with a ray of hope.

We’d just like to state for the record that the man being treated for potential Swine Flu in a Cape Town hospital was not a member of the GUMBO cast, and the rest of the team is feeling perfectly normal…despite what our last salvaged pictures may suggest… If you want to read more about the […]
